Eddie meets his fifth person. Tala. A small Filipino girl, who was the shadow that was in the burning hut, when Eddie fought in the war. Tala tried to explain to Eddie what happened with few English words, until he finally realized what she was trying to say. "You burn me". Eddie broke down. He was very angry and remorseful. He felt like all of his emotions and his conscience were spilling out before this small girl. He screamed, wailed, and cried. Tala teaches Eddie the most important lesson. Eddie always thought his life was worthless, but Tala explains to him that his life was something very very important. She told him that even though he could not save her life, he saved many children's lives, by making sure all the rides were safe. This shows Eddie that his life was not worthless, and also finds out that the small girl's hands he felt were not the girl who he pushed out of the way, but Tala's taking him to Heaven. The fourth person Eddie meets in Heaven is his deceased wife, Marguerite. They had the strongest love for each other no matter how tough time were. Unfortunately, Marguerite passed away at the age of forty seven, and Eddie was left sad, lonely, and depressed. Eddie is shocked when he finds out the Marguerite is his fourth person. He is so shocked that he trembles, and can barely speak when he first sees her. Eddie missed Marguerite so much while he was gone, and told her that when he saw him. The lesson that Marguerite teaches Eddie is that, although she had passed away their love still is strong and will never fade. She tells him that there is no need to be angry, because of all the amazing, wonderful, happy times together are always memories, and that will always be cherished between them.
The third person that Eddie meets in Heaven is Ruby Pier. Ruby Pier is the woman who the amusement park Ruby Pier is named after. She was a poor girl growing up, but then married a rich man who built an amusement park for her. When Eddie first saw her he did not know who she was, or why he was her third person. Ruby explains her story to him, and tells him that she truly did make a huge impact on Eddie's life, because without her Ruby Pier would have never been built. Ruby then takes Eddie to a moment years before. It involved Mickey Shea, Eddie's mom, and Eddie's dad. Mickey trys to harass Eddie's mom, before Eddie's dad interferes. Eddie's dad first impulse was to kill Mickey Shea. Then he thought how he had no one, he was drunk, sad, and was very important to Eddie and his family. Mickey Shea helped their family through tough times. Mickey wanders off into the ocean, but then Eddie's father helps to rescue him. This shows us that Eddie did not know his father very well. Eddie's father only wanted the best for his family and tried to protect them. Ruby taught Eddie that in order to be at peace with his mind, he needs to forgive his father.
After Eddie meets his first person in Heaven, "Blue Man", he meets his second person. His second person is his Captain from when he fought in the war in the Philippines. Eddie is shocked when he first sees his Captain. He asks captain if he was his second person, and the captain replies with betcha didn't expect me. Captain is a fine looking young man, who looks like he could be a movie star. Although, he has fine looks he has a very short temper and yells alot. Also, his teeth are yellowed with tobacco. Eddie and Captain were very close, almost like brothers. Them and the other people they served with were help in captivity for a very long time, and bonded and worked together tp get out of captivity. They never kept in touch after the war though. Eddie does not know why Captain would be his second person. He thinks that maybe he killed Captain, just like he killed the Blue Man. Clearly, the second person Eddie meets in Heaven is very important.
The first person Eddie meets in Heaven is named the "Blue Man." Although Eddie does not know it, the "Blue Man" played a very significant role in his life. Eddie was playing ball with his brother when he was younger, when it rolled out into the street. The Blue Man was driving and swerved to miss Eddie. It shocked the Blue Man and scared him. Unfortunately, he ended up having a heart attack and passing away. The Blue Man taught Eddie that his life was not worthless. He also taught Eddie that he should not feel guilty for what he did. He was only a young boy and was not aware of the consequences of his actions. This was a very meaningful and important part of the novel.
